Dragons are quadrupedal and may be flightless or winged. Early dragons like Glaurung were wingless, while later ones, such as Smaug, had wings. Some dragons, called "Fire-drakes" or "Urulóki" in Quenya, can breathe fire. They have immense strength, subtle intelligence, a hypnotic "dragon-spell" power, and an obsession with treasure hoarding.
Their origin is not entirely clear. Melkor bred dragons during the First Age as powerful weapons, but he could not create life himself, only corrupt and manipulate what existed. Early attempts to use dragons in battle failed since they took a long time to mature.
